Frequently Asked Questions
- What are towers?
Members of the order turris are called Towers, or sometimes turrisids. They are generally taller than they are wide, and relatively large compared to many adaptids. They can be found in nearly every corner of the globe, and fulfill a staggeringly myriad span of roles in their respective ecosystems. As is so often the case with adaptids, classifying individual towers can be quite a thorny puzzle! Niche edge cases, overlapping traits, and complex compound organisms are just some of the factors that researchers must grapple with when trying to pin down a given tower's exact classification. For the casual tower watcher, it's safe to assume that any structon higher than 20' and taller than it is wide is most likely a tower, or at least a turrisid.
- Who are you?
We are a collective of turrisologists hoping to bring the latest developments in tower research to the masses!
- Do Towers grow on other structons?
Yes! Especially in dense, urban areas where ground-level space and visibility are low, Towers can take root on top of other structons. Towers tend to seek high ground when they can't meet their individual connective and territorial needs, and their special capabilities often benefit the structon that hosts them. While older Tower-host relationships are quite straightforward, more modern Towers have been observed to have deeply intertwined relationships with their host structons. Chimneys are a great example of a Tower that can only be found on other structons!
- How do you know that ___?
Careful observation, meticulous recordkeeping, and non-invasive vivisections are just some of the techniques we use to learn more about towers! Due to the inherent challenges of research into anthropones, there are still plenty of open questions in the field of turrisology. It's an exciting, dynamic field of research, and we do our best to stay on top of the latest developments and update this site accordingly.
